Learn the correct way to get your oil changed with these tips.
What Type of Oil Your Car Needs for an Oil Change?
An oil change is mandatory after every 3,000-5,000 miles or 3 months, whichever of them comes first. You should always try to stay within that limit, or else you could risk damaging your car. But you can’t just put any lubricant in your vehicle.
There are so many different companies who sell engine oil and then there are several types of oil on sale that decision making can be a pain.
Fortunately, we are here to help! Here we will talk about the three major types of engine oils and discuss which one is best for you.
Conventional Engine Oil
Conventional oil is sometimes also referred to as mineral oil. That is because it is extracted from natural sources and brought to you, after some refinement, in the form of a packaged product. The oil is brought to the refinery, where it undergoes a series of treatments for performance enhancement. A few other chemicals are added so that the lubricant can work in a wide temperature range.
However, even after all the refining, you will usually find it in use on two-wheelers. That’s because conventional oil works well when it is not under a lot of stress. So, you cannot use it in an SUV or truck, where performance is your main goal. Conventional oil is, therefore, cheaper and easily available in the market compared to its competition.
Tip: If you have no choice, other than to put conventional oil in your car, you can do so. However, do not leave it in there for too long, or else there could be a significant amount of damage to the engine.
Synthetic Blend
One step up the ladder, you will find a synthetic blend, which is a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils. In other words, this kind of lubricant has the advantages of both synthetic and conventional oil and none of the apparent disadvantages.
Automotive scientists and engineers were fed up with mineral oil failing under pressure. So, they designed a new ‘blend’ of oil that could withstand the added stress that is put on the engine by a four-wheel vehicle. By adding a synthetic solution, the new and improved lubricant performed better. It could withstand more heat input and it became a lot more viscous than before. Now, almost every vehicle on the road has synthetic blend or better oil in its engine.
But if you want to go one step further, there is synthetic oil.
Synthetic Engine Oil
Synthetic oil is created in a lab under the supervision and expertise of scientists. They enhance and improve the formula of conventional oil and transform it into something that can withstand any kind of burden. The mineral oil is broken down to the molecular level and all the impurities are identified and removed. As a result, the oil performs better in extreme heat and cold. In other words, synthetic oil is a high-performance lubricant, which can work well for longer, and provide your car better mileage.
However, added performance comes at a cost, which in this case is pretty high. Synthetic oil costs much more than conventional oil or synthetic blend. Yes, it offers unmatched performance but only at the cost of draining your bank account.
Which one is better for you?
All three lubricants are great in their setting. Where synthetic oil works best, conventional oil might fail and vice versa. So, you have to see what suits your car the best. You can go on to Amazon to search and compare several products to find the best one.
As mentioned earlier, if you have a motorcycle you would be better off using conventional oil or semi-synthetic oil. A two-wheeler does not need synthetic oil unless you are riding a performance motorbike. In all other cases, the synthetic blend works the best. It is relatively cheap, it offers better performance, and it works well in a range of temperatures. You could use it for a car that you drive daily.
However, if you have a high-performance sports car or a supercar, you should only choose synthetic oil. It can handle whatever stress you put on it without compromising performance. Plus, you can go on longer between oil changes as the synthetic lubricant doesn’t break down as quickly as other types of oils.
Verdict
It might be your instinct to go for the most expensive oil. But that is not always the wisest decision. It is better to take a look at the vehicle user manual that comes with your car. Inside that book, you will find all the necessary details about your vehicle, like the type of oil you should use. Always try to follow the advice given in that booklet and you will never have problems in your car.
